AI rewrites our work mechanics every few months right now and nobody sends us the new version. So we work it out together and stay on the edge, on real production code. We love the funky visionairy videos and articles, but prefer to act on what works now.

Everything past 2026 is our scenario: average pay flat in cash terms, top quartile up 6% a year, inflation 2.3%. Flat cash is still a 20% cut in real money by 2036. Drag it and disagree with us.
There are mostly two kinds of engineers now. We want to be the third one.
Not much research around this, but the market goes its way and splits step by step.
Outside the Loop
Probably somewhere in Alaska there is an engineer or two who deny AI a 100%. These must be outliers at this point. The regular version of "outside the loop" are devs who copy snippets back and forth (2025 style) and have a fair share of manual code editing. AI is still a novelty here, not a workflow.

AI already writes a serious share of the code (~100%), but code edit approvals, preparing reviews, reviewing and QAs still take up time. Faster than before, and capped all the same: you are the bottleneck in your own pipeline in various spots. This is still the most good engineers today.
